WW1 1918 DATED BRITISH ARMY TRENCH FOLDING HAND CHAIN SAW & LEATHER POUCH
An Excellent Original WWII British Army Folding Trench Hand Chain Saw by Francis Wood & Son Ltd Sheffield Dated 1917, Contained in a Rippled Leather Case by D M Orr dated 1918
The trench hand chain saw was carried to enable trees to be cut down for the construction of wooden props when digging trenches.
It was contained in a large thin ripple leather pouch that has 4" belt loops to the rear to carry it on the equipment belt.
The pouch measures 7" x 6 3/2"., and has pockets for two wooden handles and the chain saw, all of which are present, also includes a tooth setting tool and a tooth sharpening file, see the photographs.
The chain saw has caste bronze pivoting rings for the handles to locate and one is stamped with "Francis Wood & Sons Sheffield 1917" on one of them. One of the chain links is stamped with patent number 23511/30
Both handles have brass collars.
The chain, handles and pouch are all in good undamaged and serviceable condition, the chain is sharp. The saw looks to be unused it is still part coated with the protective Cosmoline grease (a good soak in a sprit will get it off). Nice overall condition.
